Rosie Perez

Rosie Perez was born in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York City and was the daughter of Lydia Perez and Ismael Serrano Merchant marine. She is of Puerto Rican descent. Rosie attended Grover Cleveland High School, Ridgewood, Queens, New York. Then she attended Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles, California. Rosie Perez was just starting her second year in college, and was about to return to New York. She was invited to a moving-away party by her fellow students. She accepted the invitation from Spike Lee to appear in his film Do the Right Thing (1989). It would be her debut big acting job. In Peter Weir's Fearless (1993) She played the supporting role Carla Rodrigo, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Artistess. (She was defeated by Anna Paquin for The Piano (1993).) At the beginning of my career, the Latin community was the one responsible for much of the criticism I received. They used to invite me to lunch and say, "Can you go and get some lessons to improve your accent?". Also, "When you're on a talk show, can you not be so funny and loud?". The people were so critical of my voice that they dealt me a lot of criticism. It was my voice that I didn't want to change. As I grew older, the octaves dropped thanks to God. Now I find it flattering when a teenager comes up and starts imitating me.Boxing is about fighting your fears. It's about fighting your own. Floyd Mayweather could get punched in a straight shot down the middle to his face - and he'd never flinch. And I know what he's doing. [Who mentioned Don Cornelius watching her dancein the dance]: Don Cornelius did not want to see how I really danced - I was doing hip-hop, which was unfamiliar to the people of California. They were only aware of locking and popping, so they weren't interested in hip-hop dancing. Don was as if, "No, no, no. You're an asian woman. I thought "What?" It's so bizarre. Then I had to perform in high-heeled shoes, and I had never danced in high heels before, and I had the tiniest short dressthat's in my back and I'm like, Oh my God!
