Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser. She was a
fervent performer in her youth and would reenact TV commercials to keep the
family entertained. But she chose to concentrate her energy on dance. After
nine years of ballet training at Spain's National Conservatory she was able to

that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). Her luck changed completely in
1998 when the film industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) earned her a Best
Actress Goya. After a few more attempts to make a film in English Cruz's first
international breakthrough was Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999), where
she played an unchaste but very well-meaning nun. Cruz found herself highly
