Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art through her grandmother Denise. She was night nurses to afford her mother the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to use the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. Her father was a witness to the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to check the trash inside the house of one of jury. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999.
